Board language and automatic translation

Set the language of your board, let visitors pick their own, and have ideas, comments, statuses and topics translated automatically.

Who can do this
  • Owner: yes
  • Admin: yes
  • Moderator: no
  • Idea Submitter: no
  • Viewer: no
  • Read-only: no
Where it isSettingsLanguage

The Language page is one form with one Save settings button.

Board language

English, Português, Español, 中文, Deutsch, Français, Polski, العربية, 한국어, Italiano or Română. It sets the board's navigation, buttons, forms and messages. The admin stays in English.

Visitors can always switch language themselves from the globe menu on the board, and their choice is remembered. Tick Detect the visitor's browser language automatically and a visitor whose browser asks for one of the eleven languages gets it without choosing.

Translate ideas automatically

Off to begin with. When it is on:

  • The title and text of every idea are translated into all eleven languages. Ideas already on the board are done in the background; the page shows the progress.
  • A new idea is translated within moments of being added, and again if it is edited.
  • Visitors see the translation on the idea list, the roadmap and the idea's page. The original stays one click away on the idea's page.
  • Announcements and answers to your own form fields are not translated. Comments have a switch of their own, below.

Switch it off and ideas read as they were written again. Translations already made are kept for when you switch it back on.

Comments, statuses and topics

Translate comments automatically does the same for every public comment on an idea: visitors read the thread in their language with the original one click away, and Insights quotes a translated comment in the board language. Internal notes are never sent anywhere. Translate statuses automatically and Translate topics automatically do it for those names, on the board only. The admin keeps comments and names as they were written.

What is sent out, and the daily limit

Idea titles and text, public comments when their switch is on, and the names of statuses and topics are sent to OpenAI to be translated. Names, email addresses, votes and internal notes are not.

A board can make 5,000 automatic translations in a day. Past that, the rest continue as the day rolls on. A counter under the switch shows how many have been made.
